Detox Your Life: Simple Changes for a Healthier, Toxin-Free Home

Detox Your Life: Simple Changes for a Healthier, Toxin-Free Home

In today’s world, we’re constantly surrounded by toxins - hidden in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the products we use, and even the food we eat. While it may not be possible to avoid all toxins completely, there are plenty of ways to reduce our exposure and make healthier choices.

Detoxing your life doesn’t just mean eating cleaner and exercising more - it’s about making intentional decisions to invest in items and services that support your health and well-being. Here’s how to make some great-value, big purchases and lifestyle shifts to help detox your life in a sustainable and holistic way.

Daily Detox Tip 1. Invest in a High-Quality Drinking Water Filter

The water we drink is full of potential toxins—from chlorine and fluoride to pesticides and heavy metals. One of the first and easiest ways to protect yourself is by investing in a drinking water filter.

What to Look For: A good water filter should remove chlorine, heavy metals (such as lead), fluoride, and other harmful contaminants. Look for a filter with a multi-stage filtration system for the best results.

The product I used to recommend to anyone and everyone who would listen is a Berkey Water Filter, a renowned unit that filters out pretty much everything.

Sadly it seems they have run into issues with production and replacement filters for their units have been sold out for a long time now. However, Berkey claims their filters will last for 11 years so even if they are never in stock again, I’d say it's still a worthwhile investment.

My Other Favourite Options:

  • Soma Water Filter Jug: A stylish and eco-friendly filter jug that combines high-performance filtration with a sleek design.

  • Aarke Water Filter Jug: A premium water filter jug that ensures your water is free from chlorine, pesticides, and other contaminants.

Where to Find It: Check local home goods stores, eco-friendly online retailers like Planet Organic, or websites like Amazon.

Daily Detox Tip 2. Upgrade Your Bath or Shower with a Filter

Showering in chlorinated water can be just as harmful as drinking it. The chlorine and other chemicals in tap water can irritate your skin and eyes, disrupt your hormones, and even be absorbed through the skin. Installing a bath or shower filter can help reduce this exposure.

My Favourite Option:

In the absence of the Berkey Shower Filter, I now recommend clients pick up a Hello Klean Shower Filter which uses a multi-stage filtration system to remove chlorine, heavy metals, and other contaminants.

Daily Detox Tip 3. Air Purifiers for Clean, Fresh Air

Indoor air quality is just as important as the water you drink. Air purifiers can help remove dust, pollen, pet dander, smoke, and even toxins like volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other pollutants.

My Favourite Options:

  • Levoit: A reliable, reasonably priced air purifier that offers HEPA filtration.

  • Coway Airmega: A more expensive but highly efficient air purifier for larger spaces.

Where to Find It: John Lewis, Amazon, and Currys.

Daily Detox Tip 4. Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

Most household cleaning products are packed with toxic chemicals. By switching to non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning solutions, you reduce your exposure to these harmful substances and create a safer home.

My Favourite Options:

  • Bio-D

  • Method

  • Herbal Health and Home: Offers natural, eco-friendly cleaning products.

  • Wilton

Where to Find It: Stores like Whole Foods, Well Easy, and The Ethical Supermarket. Herbal Health and Home have their own website.

Daily Detox Tip 5. Switch to Natural Bathroom Products

The products you use in your bathroom can contain chemicals that harm your body and the environment.

Toothpaste:

  • Gutology (Hydroxyapatite-based, fluoride-free toothpaste)

  • Biomed (Natural, non-toxic ingredients for oral care)

Deodorant:

  • Wild (plastic-free, natural deodorants)

  • Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant

  • Salt of the Earth (Natural deodorant with mineral salts)

Where to Find It: Natural Collection, Planet Organic, or Ethical Superstore.

Daily Detox Tip 6. Use the Yuka Scanner for Food and Cosmetic Choices

The Yuka app allows you to scan the barcode of food and cosmetic products to find out exactly what's inside.

Where to Find It: Download the Yuka app from the App Store or Google Play for free.

Daily Detox Tip 7. Reduce EMF Exposure in Your Home

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from Wi-Fi routers, mobile phones, and other electronic devices can interfere with your health. Reducing your exposure to EMFs is an important step in creating a healthier environment.

What to Look For: Consider EMF shielding products such as EMF-blocking phone cases and EMF-free sleeping areas.

Affordable Options:

  • Shield Your Body: Offers a variety of EMF protection products including phone cases and home shields.

  • DefenderShield: Specialises in EMF-blocking phone cases, laptop shields, and other devices to reduce exposure.

Where to Find It: Visit Shield Your Body, DefenderShield, or local wellness stores that sell EMF protection products.

Daily Detox Tip 8. Plastic-Free Kitchen Pans and Storage

Switching to plastic-free kitchen storage and non-toxic pans is another great way to reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals. Look for cookware made from natural materials, such as cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic.

What to Look For: Non-stick cookware can contain chemicals like Teflon, which release harmful toxins when heated.

Opt for ceramic, cast iron, or stainless-steel cookware. Use glass with plastic lids for food storage and compostable food storage bags like the ones from ECOOPTS.

Where to Find It:

  • Le Creuset (offers high-quality, durable cookware).

  • The Green Life (specialises in plastic-free and eco-friendly kitchen products).

  • Carote pans available on Amazon are an economical option.

Daily Detox Tip 9. Support Sustainable Food Choices

Eating organic and locally sourced food not only supports your health but also reduces your exposure to harmful chemicals and pesticides commonly used in conventional farming. Consider using a veg box delivery scheme, buying from an online organic butcher, or sourcing fresh, raw milk directly from a local raw milk farmer.

Veg Box Delivery Schemes: Look for local organic box schemes that deliver fresh, seasonal produce straight to your door. These schemes usually focus on reducing food miles and supporting small-scale farmers.

My Favourite Options:

  • Riverford Organic Farmers: Known for its organic veg boxes and ethical farming practices.

  • Abel & Cole: Another reliable provider of organic food, including fresh vegetables, fruit, and meat.

Online Organic Butchers:

  • Eversfield Organic: A trusted source for organic meat from grass-fed, pasture-raised animals, offering a range of cuts, including poultry, beef, lamb, and more.

  • The Ethical Butcher: Offering high-quality organic and sustainable meat delivered to your door.

Raw Milk Farmers: Check out local farms for raw, unpasteurised milk, which is often available directly from farmers or farm shops.

These changes may seem small, but together they significantly reduce the toxins in your life and improve your overall health.
