Garlic Oxymel: A Powerful Antimicrobial Remedy

An oxymel combines the antimicrobial power of garlic with the healing properties of vinegar and honey. This traditional remedy is both potent and palatable, offering significant health benefits. Oxymels are ancient preparations, known for their ability to soothe coughs, support digestion, and boost the immune system due to the synergistic effects of their acidic and sweet components working together as an effective herbal extraction and delivery method.

Ingredients

  • 30 g (about 10 cloves) garlic bulb
  • 4 g (1 heaped tsp) fennel seeds
  • 4 g (1 heaped tsp) caraway seeds
  • 100 ml apple cider vinegar
  • 40 ml (about 2 tbsp) honey

Instructions

  1. Simmer seeds in vinegar over low heat for 5-10 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat.
  3. Add the peeled and crushed garlic to the warm vinegar mixture.
  4. Strain the mixture to remove solids, then add honey.
  5. Gently warm the mixture if necessary to fully combine the honey, ensuring it doesn't get too hot to preserve honey's beneficial enzymes.
